How to track your meals without weighing your food

· 5 min read

Weighing every gram of rice works for a few weeks, then life happens. If tracking takes ten minutes a meal, you stop. The good news: for most goals, your hand is precise enough.

Why weighing everything rarely lasts

Food labels and databases already carry an error margin, and home portions vary from day to day. Weighing adds a lot of effort for precision you do not really get. What moves results is eating roughly the right amounts, most days, for months.

So the goal is a method you can keep everywhere: at home, at work, at a restaurant, at a friend's.

The hand portion method

Your hand comes with you to every meal, and it scales with your size. Build each plate like this, then adjust the carbs to how active your day is:

  • Protein: 1 palm (meat, fish, eggs, tofu, Greek yogurt).
  • Vegetables: 2 fists.
  • Carbs: 1 fist or 1 cupped hand (rice, pasta, potatoes, bread), more on training days.
  • Fats: 1 thumb (oil, butter, cheese, nuts).

At a restaurant

Eating out does not ruin your day if you steer the plate. Start with the protein, fill half the plate with vegetables or salad, then choose between carbs and drinks: fries, bread, dessert or a cocktail. Pick the one you want most and skip the rest.

Then move on. One meal never decides your week; the next ones simply rebalance.

Consistency beats precision

Log every meal, even approximately, rather than three perfect meals and two missing ones. The pattern over a week tells you much more than exact grams on a single day.

Check your weekly weight average and how you feel in training. If nothing moves for three or four weeks, adjust one portion, usually carbs or fats, and look again.

How BuiltYou does it

BuiltYou's nutrition, Decision Zero, works in portions instead of grams. Snap a photo of your plate and the app reads what is on it, or tap the foods yourself: chicken, rice, salad. It counts protein, carbs, fats and vegetables, and rebalances the rest of your day after a big meal. No scale, no barcode, no guilt.

General information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, talk to a professional first.
